Mining, Maritime and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a mentor and guide whose wisdom and influence continue to shape the lives of those who knew him.
In a heartfelt message marking the first anniversary of Raila's death on Thursday, October 15, Joho reflected on the lessons he learnt from the veteran politician and expressed gratitude for having shared part of his life's journey under his guidance.
Joho said Raila's absence remained painful, particularly because of the moments and conversations they would never get to share again.
"Today, as I remember you Baba, my heart carries both the sorrow of your absence and the gratitude of having walked a part of life's journey under your guidance," Joho stated.
The Cabinet Secretary added that despite the grief, he remained grateful for the opportunity to learn from the former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, whose political career spanned decades and influenced Kenya's democratic development.
Joho maintained that Raila's death had not erased his contribution to the country, noting that the principles, courage and lessons he imparted continued to live on through those he mentored.
"Baba, you may have departed from our sight but you have not departed from our story. You live in the principles you instilled, the courage you inspired and the lessons you imparted," he said.
The tribute comes as Kenyans gather at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, to commemorate one year since Raila died on October 15, 2025.
The anniversary provides an opportunity for family members, political leaders, supporters and other Kenyans to reflect on the legacy of a politician who played a significant role in the country's multiparty democracy and public affairs.
Joho further acknowledged the personal impact Raila had on his life, saying the former Prime Minister's influence would endure beyond his physical absence.
He prayed for Raila's eternal rest and expressed hope that the light he brought into the world would continue shining through those who had the privilege of knowing him.
"Death may have closed the chapter of your earthly life but it cannot close the book of your influence," Joho stated.
He concluded his message with a farewell to the former ODM leader, describing him as his mentor and guide.
"Rest well my mentor. Rest well my guide. Rest well Baba," Joho added.
