Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has mourned veteran journalist Kitavi Mutua, revealing that the deceased was helping him write his second autobiography before his untimely death.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, November 1, Kalonzo described Mutua as a respected journalist, a son of Ukambani and a longtime acquaintance whose work helped bring stories from the region to national attention.

The former Vice President said he received the news of Mutua's death with great sadness, recalling their longstanding professional and personal relationship.

Kalonzo noted that Mutua spent years reporting on Kitui and the wider Ukambani region, covering politics, healthcare, agriculture and environmental issues for audiences across the country.

He also recognised the journalist's contribution to the media industry, particularly his role in mentoring young reporters and helping them establish themselves professionally.

However, Kalonzo disclosed that their relationship extended beyond journalism, revealing that Mutua had been working closely with him on his second autobiography.

The Wiper leader expressed regret that the journalist's death had interrupted the project, saying they would no longer have the opportunity to complete the work together.

"I am sorry that we will not finish that work together," Kalonzo said, reflecting on the personal loss occasioned by Mutua's passing.

He extended his condolences to the deceased's family, former colleagues at Nation Media Group and everyone who had known him, praying that they would find strength and comfort during the difficult period.

Kalonzo concluded his tribute by quoting 2 Timothy 4:7, a biblical passage about completing one's journey faithfully, before bidding the journalist farewell.

Mutua died on Friday, October 30, while receiving treatment at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) in Nairobi.

According to reports quoting family spokesperson Faith Kithele, the veteran journalist had suffered complications following a bite from a red spitting cobra.

He had reportedly spent approximately two weeks in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, with complications affecting his kidneys, liver and lungs. His condition was further complicated by diabetes.

Mutua previously worked as a Nation Media Group correspondent based in Kitui, where he covered regional affairs for several years before venturing into private business.

His death has triggered tributes from political leaders, journalists and members of the Ukambani community, who have remembered his contribution to journalism and community development.
